McGawn Bros was founded in 1964 by David and James McGawn who were originally making wrought iron gates in a garden shed in Ayr. After a year, the Company moved to a yard in Maybole and in 1968 decided to branch into the world of haulage buying their first unit and trailer. The artic was used to haul timber from Argyll toWorkington for a local sawmill, and even to this day they are still a valued customer. McGawn Bros carried on making gates until 1975, by which time the fleet had grown to six vehicles then in 1977 the business moved to their present site in Alloway Road. Here they have offices, a workshop and 26,000 sq ft of warehousing. There is also another 18,000 sq ft at Ladywell Terrace, Maybole. At present the fleet consists of 11 Scania tractor units coupled to tri-axled flat and curtainsided trailers, depending on customer needs.
