| Founded in the early 1830s The Great Western Railway originated from the desire of Bristol merchants to maintain the position of their port as the second port in the country and the chief one for American trade. Great Central Railway passenger services began from London on 15th March 1899. The GC quickly gained an excellent reputation for being a fast, comfortable and efficient way of reaching the Midlands from London, and pioneered ideas such as buffets on the trains! |
