| In 1986, Formula Ford racer Ron Field decided to enter the Road Saloon Championship, but wanted to challenge the front wheel drive hatchbacks then in vogue. He chose an Avenger Tiger and engaged Etype racing legend Dick Whittington to build the shell, Leda to produce a custom suspension set-up, Griffin Motorsport to produce a 165bhp 1600cc balanced big valve engine, adding Lotus Sunbeam calipers and Capri brake discs. Finishing second on the cars debut at Brands Hatch on May 31st 1987, four race wins followed that year. Then in 1988, Ron and his Avenger went on to win fourteen races on the way to claiming two championships: the BRSCC’s Class C Super Road Saloons Championship, and the Trueseal Production Saloon Car Challenge at Lyddon Hill. |
