| Although its role necessitated flights from the UK, via Gibraltar, to Sale, in Morocco, No295 Squadron normally retained standard European Bomber Command camouflage on its Halifax’s, rather than the North African theatre bomber camouflage in which mid-stone replaced the areas of dark green – DG396 was an exception, boasting the less common desert scheme. On 17th September 1943, this aircraft, towing a Horsa glider, was attacked by eight Ju 88’s. Its pilot, Flg Off Norman, refused to jettison his glider and skilfully evaded cannon and rocket fire from the Ju 88’s. Released February 2008 |
