Ford Cortina Mk4 1.6L, Garda
Item code: VA11908
An Garda Síochána, the Republic of Ireland's police force, used the Cortina Mk4 extensively because of its reliability and capaciousness. During the 1970s, Ireland’s government ran a ‘Buy Irish’ campaign, and because Ford had an assembly plant in Cork they purchased these locally built cars which carried a small green sticker on the rear window proclaiming them to be ‘Guaranteed Irish’.
A 1.6L Cortina was often used as the main district patrol car in rural areas and was worked by a single officer for eight hours, although other officers could be called upon if required. In cities, where some stations had two cars, the 1.6L would often supplement the main district car, a 2.0L Cortina.
