RM 1164, part of the initial production run of 850 vehicles, entered service in February 1960 at Walthamstow (WW) garage. In May 1962, following the closure of trolleybus route 604, RM 1164 was used on route 131 from Kingston to Wimbledon. In the early years of operation the Routemaster was constantly subject to modifications in the quest for perfection.
RM 1164 has many original features, such as the London Transport roundel on the bonnet (later replaced by a triangular badge incorporated in the grille), brake ventilation grilles beneath the headlamps, full depth air intake beneath the destination and an offside route number box on the staircase panel. All of these features subsequently were altered or discontinued.
After withdrawal from London Transport service in 1989, RM 1164 migrated north to the East Midlands, owned by Stagecoach, and was re-registered NSG 686A. It was later transferred within the group for further service in Perth with Bluebird Buses.
