Scania R Flatbed & Straw Load – G. Owen & Sons, Newtown, Montgomeryshire

Brothers Henry and George Owen bought the company in 1958 from an existing coal merchant who supplied coal to domestic customers in and around the Mid-Wales area.  Due to illness, Henry retired in 1968 and George continued to manage until 1970 when his two sons Murray and Robert joined him and a year later the company became G. Owen & Sons.

Following George’s retirement in 1973 Murray and Robert have developed the company to its present form where their sons Daniel and Rhys are now also heavily involved in the business.  In 1976, Murray and Robert purchased pre-packing facilities for the retail market of the Coal industry and developed further when moving into general haulage in 1988.

Such is the variety in loads, the vehicles can be seen on a farm in the Welsh Mountains one day, and on Oxford Street attending to major customer, Laura Ashley, the next.  CV55 CWJ is the flagship of the fleet and won best Scania two years running at the all Wales truck show in 2007/08.
