Smiths of Bury Haulage Contractor was established in 1876 delivering coal to the cotton mills with a horse and cart. The company purchased their first truck, a Leyland, in 1923 delivering cloth to the local factories.
Times may certainly have changed but the company is still thriving in its third century in business and is still in the hands of a Smith, fourth generation Anthony.
They operate a fleet of nine DAF trucks and largely operate in the paper industry.
The Atkinson Borderer load in this model was purchased brand new in 1973 for £6,200 and was in service until 1985. Nineteen years after being retired she was restored to her former glory and is now a regular on the truck show scene throughout the UK.
