Production of the Allegro’s 1300cc engine was reduced due to preparations for the forthcoming Metro during 1978 so BL created the Special LE to maintain production levels. Priced at only £2,965.95 to tempt buyers away from the 1300, it offered a 5-speed gearbox, Sundym tinted-glass, passenger-door-mirror, lockable fuel-cap, fog-lamps, tachometer and a leather steering wheel. Launched on Wednesday the 5th April 1978 and publicised as ‘The Allegro of a Lifetime’ just two metallic colours were offered; Tara Green and Astral Blue. Only 6,800 Special LEs were produced and very few survive. However, the car modelled has been lovingly cared for since 1995 by Surrey enthusiasts Mr and Mrs Don and Norma Bridle.
