Tyneside Passenger Transport Executive was formed in 1969 by the merging of Newcastle and South Shields Corporations. Their logo, known as ‘the Chinese swearword’ represented the areas North and South of the River Tyne. The livery is reflective of the old Newcastle Corporations livery with cadmium yellow and cream with maroon lining and wings. Local government re-organisation in 1974 saw the area expand to include Sunderland which resulted in a rename for the regions’ Passenger Transport Executive, to Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport Executive and the same livery was being applied to their buses. Tyne and Wear and Merseyside were the only Passenger Transport Executives to also operate ferries.
