The 309 GTi has never quite achieved the cult status of its little brother the 205 but it certainly deserves to. Originally created as a stretched offshoot to the 205 project, which is why it’s a little narrower than the class norm, it shares much of the 205’s DNA including its floorpan, engine and gearbox so is equally entertaining but much more practical. In this era Peugeot’s chassis engineers were renowned for producing compliant cars that also handled and steered superbly and the 309 GTi was no exception. Only 70kgs heavier than the 205 its longer wheelbase made the 309 less prone to lift-off oversteer and increased its stability under braking.
