Axis aviation spectacle at Cosford’s RAF 100 show

This year’s Cosford Airshow proved to be a spectacular celebration of the first 100 years of the Royal Air Force, with some of the RAF Museum’s rare exhibits taken from their hangars to form part of an impressive static display. In their absence, one of the world’s finest collections of Axis air power enjoyed a little extra room for the weekend and in this latest edition of Aerodrome, we feature this unexpected Axis contribution to this RAF centenary show.

Aerodrome 100 at East Kirkby Airshow

Aerodrome marks its centenary edition by paying our latest visit to the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre, on the occasion of their main Airshow of the year. As well as catching up with their famous Lancaster ‘Just Jane’ and enjoying a fabulous air display, we also witnessed the magnificent sight of the recently arrived De Havilland Mosquito Nightfighter HJ711 displayed next to the Lancaster for an evocative photo opportunity and the first for an East Kirkby show. In addition to this, there is also the small matter of our most spectacular Aerodrome competition to tell you about – you most definitely will not want to miss this!

Spectacular Dambusters tribute at RIAT 2018

The aviation extravaganza which is the Royal International Air Tattoo can always be relied upon to include so many highlight acts that it is often difficult to fit all the action into a single review article. In this 99th edition of Aerodrome, we will be featuring one particularly poignant display from this year’s show, which marked the 75th Anniversary of one of the RAF’s most celebrated squadrons and the introduction of a stunning new combat aircraft.

Duxford’s fabulous Festival of Flight

Have you ever been to a UK Airshow where an ‘Alpine Anteater’ shared star billing with a trio of French Air Force acts? That is exactly what happened at the recent Duxford Air Festival and our Aerodrome blog was there to document this fabulous event.

A Supersonic Gathering

It’s Aerodrome time again and this time we have something very special for you – a gathering of Lightnings. Join us as we head for Bruntingthorpe airfield and the unique opportunity to see four examples of this Cold War classic gathered together in the same place for one memorable weekend. We feature all four of the Lightnings in attendance, but pay particular attention to the illustrious guest at this Lightning party.

A ‘Bolt’ from the blue

Even though the RAF Centenary commemorations are now in full swing, the latest edition of Aerodrome focuses on the triumphant return of a former UK Airshow favourite and a classic USAAF WWII Warbird of significant pedigree. With exclusive pictures taken at the recent Duxford and Cosford shows, as well as pictures of the same aircraft back in 2005, we see how this mighty aircraft faced derision when it first arrived in the UK, but quickly proved to be an outstanding fighting aircraft despite of its generous proportions

Marking the 75th anniversary of the Dambusters Raid

In the latest edition of Aerodrome, we mark the 75th Anniversary of the Dambusters raid by taking you on a journey up the hills surrounding the Derwent reservoir and allowing you to experience this historic occasion from the perspective of an early rising aviation enthusiast.

Sizzling Shuttleworth marks RAF Centenary in style

We are off and running! The latest edition of Aerodrome celebrates the start of this RAF Centenary Airshow year with a review of the recent Shuttleworth Season Premier Airshow at Old Warden airfield in Bedfordshire. Good weather and a great display line-up ensured this was the perfect way to start the Airshow season and with it, this significant centenary year for the Royal Air Force.

de Havilland Aviation Museum review part II

It’s Aerodrome time again and in this latest edition, we head back to the de Havilland Aircraft Museum for the final instalment of our review feature. This time, we look at the history of the museum site, discover how the magnificent Mosquito was manufactured and view a rather poignant find from the depths of Loch Striven. We also have a final photographic ‘museum walk-around’ to showcase some of the other aviation exhibits at Salisbury Hall.

A trio of magnificent Mosquitos at historic Salisbury Hall

In the latest edition of Aerodrome, we head down to Salisbury Hall in Hertfordshire, where it is possible to view three magnificently restored de Havilland Mosquitos in the same historic hangar. Making this an even more memorable occasion, two of the aircraft were dragged outside the hangar for a unique photo opportunity which was definitely not to be missed. We bring you a report from the event and look at why the de Havilland Aircraft Museum is such a unique aviation location.

RAF Cosford by night

As this week marked the centenary of the establishment of the Royal Air Force, we had to come up with something a little special for the 91st edition of our Aerodrome blog. Join us as we head for RAF Cosford and an exclusive night shoot event, which featured several of the RAF’s most enigmatic post war jet powered aircraft, including a famous Phantom which has only recently found a new home in the Midlands.

A moving Spitfire tribute

In the previous edition of Aerodrome, we looked at a project which commemorated one Lancashire town's determination to support the war effort in WWII by raising funds to purchase their own Spitfire. In this latest edition, we look at the rich aviation history this part of the UK can boast and how the team behind the Lytham St Annes Spitfire Memorial have continued to commemorate this heritage. We report from their first Open Day event of 2018, which took place in a genuine WWII hangar at the former RAF Squires Gate.
