Rover SD1 3500 V8 Vanden Plas, Australian Specification, Opaline Green
The SD1 modelled was an Australian specification example built on August 8th 1983 and retained for a Rover manager. It still features its smaller 4-bolt export specification plenum, has the 8.13:1 lower compression ratio engine used in emission controlled markets and the original specification non-vented front brake discs. At that time UK market fuel injected cars were not available with an automatic gearbox, but export market cars were, and senior managers could choose cars 'off the line' with this desirable specification. The 'OE' Birmingham number plate was common on press office, racing and prototype SD1s.
It was purchased as a family car by Barrie Curtis in 1985 and he sold it in 1987. Initially, the Curtis family didn't know its history but Australia bound SD1s never featured an EFi badge and, as a car-mad 14 year old, son Matt couldn't understand this so persuaded his Dad to order one from Mann Egerton, Nottingham; it's still on the car. Later, when they couldn't get it to run warm enough in winter they realised it was fitted with an Australian-market thermostat and started to research the car's origins. Matt was alerted to the car being for sale in October 2011 by the SD1 Club, bought 'Bruce' back, and although it was very rusty comprehensively restored it. He kept the car until January 2015, during which time it featured in Practical Classics, and it's now owned by Sussex-based enthusiast Neil Castle. Australian-market SD1 figures, correct for this car and different from a UK car:
- Engine: 3528cc OHV V8
- Power: 142bhp@5000rpm
- Torque: 181Lb.ft@3000rpm
- Maximum speed: 178kmh
- 0-100kmh: 11.4secs
- Kerb weight: 1480kg
